Prerequisites: The course is not open to students with credit for any of 530, 5530H (531H), or Stat 4201. The prerequisite for this course is C- or better in 2153, 2162.xx, 2173, 2177, 2182H, 4182H; or credit for 254.xx, 263.xx, 263.01H, or 264H.

Textbook : Probability by Jim Pitman, Springer-Verlag.

Topics to cover: rules of probability, conditional probability and independence, binomial distributions, normal approximation, Poisson approximation, random variables, expectation, variance, continuous distributions and continuous joint distributions, dependence, conditional distribution, conditional expectations; as well as some extra topics that are not covered in the textbook, including: probability generating function, moment generating function, Chi-square distribution, t distribution, F distribution. Homeworks: The homework problems will be assigned along the semester. Check Carmen for the homework assignment and due time. There might not be time to cover everything in the text during the lecture. You should read notes and the section(s) discussed in class before doing homework. Also, you should work through some other problems besides those are assigned. You are encouraged to attempt the problems by yourself first, and when there are some difficulties, discuss with classmates, or the instructor.
