Algebraic Geometry Seminar - Herb Clemens
Title: Eliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau (CY) threefolds and fourfolds in string theorySpeaker: Herb Clemens (Ohio State University)Abstract: The talk will construct one example of the ‘equivalence’ between an elliptically-fibered CY-threefold endowed with a semi-stable $E_8 + E_8$ bundle and a semi-stable degeneration of an elliptically-fibered CY-fourfold. I will then loosely describe how this equivalence is used to ‘break’ the SU(5)-symmetry of grand unified theory (GUT) to the $SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$-symmetry of what physicists call the Standard Model of the physics of our cosmos.Seminar URL: https://research.math.osu.edu/agseminar/

Abstract: The talk will construct one example of the ‘equivalence’ between an elliptically-fibered CY-threefold endowed with a semi-stable $E_8 + E_8$ bundle and a semi-stable degeneration of an elliptically-fibered CY-fourfold.
