Grad Student Seminar - Yu Zhang
Title: Localization Methods in Algebraic Topology
Speaker: Yu Zhang (Ohio State University)
Abstract: Doing localization is like peeling a banana. You'll lose the banana's peel but that's still better than eating a banana directly. The idea of localization is to only focus on the information we care about and throw away everything else, so that we can simplify problems in this way. As an example, we will see how homology localization can help us study topological spaces. A great feature of localization is that it can be easily generalized to lots of different areas. We will discuss general localization methods at the end of this talk. No background knowledge will be required but familiarity with basic algebraic topology will be helpful.
