Title: Topological invariants from higher categories
Speaker: Niles Johnson, OSU
Abstract: There is a rich interplay between topological and algebraic strictures. My work focuses on the connection between higher categories and stable homotopy theory. In this talk I will explain a classical calculation of stable pi_1 and pi_2 via Postnikov towers, together with recent progress in developing categorical algebra which models the relevant tools. While working through the calculation, I will explain the use of cohomology operations on the topological side and the role of symmetric monoidal structure on the categorical side.
