Title: Steps Toward Active Learning

Abstract: TAs in some of our calculus courses have been encouraged to try active learning as a teaching strategy, and have been provided some materials to facilitate active learning in their classrooms. TAs who have the opportunity to try the same in other courses, but without provided resources, may have concerns about how to implement a new teaching strategy within the confines of a tightly coordinated course. In this seminar, we will discuss my own attempts towards active learning in a coordinated calculus classroom. I’ll talk about some strategies I’ve tried, what I have liked about them, how my students have responded, and how I have refined my strategies over time. We will have plenty of time for questions and discussion about this topic.
