Math faculty, led by Dongbin Xiu and Maria Han Viega, part of winning team for Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative program

Professor and Chair Dongbin Xiu and Professor Maria Han Veiga

OSU mathematics faculty, led by Dongbin Xiu and Maria Han Viega, are a part of a winning team (along with Stanford, Caltech, and UC San Diego) for the Mathematics of Digital Twins award by the newly announced Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program funded by the Department of Defense (DoD). OSU's Mathematics Department has been awarded $2,134,000 over the next 5 years on "Topic 11: A New Mathematical Paradigm for Integrating Data, Models, Decisions." OSU's supporting office is the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).

At an average award amount of $7.5 million over five years, these competitive grants will support 30 teams located at 73 U.S. academic institutions, subject to satisfactory research progress and the availability of funds. This program allows teams of investigators from multiple disciplines to generate collective insights, facilitating the growth of cutting-edge technologies to address the Department of Defense's unique challenges. The highly competitive program, which complements the Department's single-investigator basic research grants, has made immense contributions to current and future military capabilities and produced numerous commercial sector applications.
