Title: Combinatorics of the compact tropical Grassmannian

Speaker: Angie Cueto (OSU)

Abstract: Tropical varieties are combinatorial shadows of algebraic varieties: they allow us to study solutions to systems of polynomial equations using polyhedral tools. This talk will be a gentle introduction to the process of tropicalization and initial degenerations. Focusing on the example of Grassmannian varieties I will illustrate the combinatorial challenges that arise in tropical geometry.
