Title:  Adding Numbers, Shuffling Cards, and an Amazing Matrix

Speaker: Persi Diaconis, Stanford University

Abstract:  When several large integers are added in the usual manner, "carries" occur along the way.  These carries form a Markov chain with an "amazing" transition matrix.  The same matrix comes up in the combinatorics of the Veronese embedding, in shuffling cards, and as the Foulkes character table of the symmetric group.  This is joint work with Jason Fulman.
