Title:  Homology of configuration spaces of disks in a strip

Abstract:  We study the configuration space of n disks of diameter 1 in an infinitely long strip of width w. Hard disk configuration spaces are relevant in statistical physics; this family was introduced by Alpert, Kahle and Macpherson as an example with relatively approachable topology. I will present a basis for the integral homology of these spaces for every n and w, and make observations about how it changes when n varies (from the point of view of representation stability) and when w varies (from the point of view of persistent homology). This is ongoing joint work with Hannah Alpert.
