Andrew Sparks
My name is Andrew Sparks, and I am extremely grateful for this gift that has been entrusted to me. This gift will help me pay for actuarial exams, study materials, and living expenses.
I chose OSU because of the tailored Actuarial Science pathway and a location close to all my friends and family. I made it through Columbus State Community College with an Associate specializing in math and continued to enjoy math beyond that. I love that the Actuarial Science major has a heavy application of math and problem-solving, which drove me to major in it.
Striving to become an actuary also complements my other interests in life. I love strategy games such as board games like Catan and card games like Magic the Gathering.
Thank you.
Rachel Morgan
I am incredibly grateful for this scholarship and the impact it has had on my life. My name is Rachel Morgan, and I am dual majoring in actuarial science and in finance.
As a young girl, I had a particular interest in math and business. While my sisters were learning about algebra, I was learning to read, and considered myself a math wizard. As I grew older, my fondness for math grew stronger. My trigonometry professor recommended I explore actuarial science and it has become my dream to become an actuary.
Over this past summer, I worked at Humana, a health insurance company. There, I worked as an actuary, advancing my excel skills, learning a new programming language called SAS Enterprise, giving technical presentations to upper management, and networking. Also, within my actuarial career, I have passed my first two actuarial exams: Probability and Financial Mathematics. My goal is to pass exam FAM, Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics, and ASTAM, Advanced Short-Term Modeling, before I graduate from college. In my actuarial career, I hope to attain my FSA, Fellow of the Society of Actuaries credential, and become a great leader.
This scholarship will help me achieve my goals. This scholarship allows me to focus more on school and less on money. I can use my earnings on study materials for the actuarial exams or on the expenses for the exams themselves. I am so appreciative that I was chosen for this scholarship, and I hope that my donors understand that I am beyond grateful for their generosity.
David Dumanskyy
First and foremost, I would like to thank the donors my Scholarship for the Mathematics Fund. My current rank at The Ohio State University is 3, and I am dual majoring in mathematics and physics. A future career goal of mine is to achieve a Ph.D. in either mathematics or physics and become a professor within that field. I've always found passion in helping people understand math by introducing different ways to think about problems. As a result of that passion, I work as a tutor at the MSLC (Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center) and plan to work as a Teacher's Assistant in the future. This opportunity for financial support means a lot to me and will heavily motivate me to pursue my education. Ohio State University has many great opportunities and is known for its supportive community, which was a big factor when deciding which college to attend. As for my path of study, I have always had a fascination with mathematics in the way our real world is encoded with it. From the golden ratio to the constant pi, and utilizing physics to be able to make predictions made me curious about what more there could be to uncover. I do a plethora of self-study when outside of the classroom as mathematics is something that could be self-taught. If I could tell one thing about myself to the donors, it would be that I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity as it will ameliorate the financial costs for higher education. I should also mention how happy this made my parents. Seeing that I was nominated for this scholarship makes them incredibly proud, so I must thank you again for this opportunity as it's very meaningful to me.
