The Department of Mathematics has instituted procedures for adding math classes, waitlisting courses, and changing sections. Students should periodically check their schedules online as enrollment and classroom changes occur frequently. 

Through the First Week of Classes

Adding math courses during the first week of class:

Students are able to add a math class themselves through the first week of the term for courses in which they are eligible and for which seats are still open. (Note: First term students need the help of an Advisor to add a class).  

Waitlisting math courses during the first week of class:

If the math course is full, students are asked to put themselves on the waitlist (or for first term students, ask your advisor to put you on the waitlist). The math course waitlist will run through the first week of the term. If you are first on the waitlist, when a student drops from the course, you will be added into the course. 

Note: If there is a schedule conflict or the addition of the class puts you at more than 18 hours, then the system will skip over you.  

Changing sections during the first week of class:

Students are able to change from one math section to another on their own through the first week of the semester, provided both the recitation section and corresponding lecture are open. To do this, students should drop the course they are enrolled in and add the new section in Buckeye Link. Students should first confirm that the desired section is open before dropping their current section. 

Note: If the lecture is closed and recitation is open, do not drop your current class. Students will not be able to add themselves to the new section if the associated lecture is closed. 

During the Second Week of Classes

Late Adds: Adding Lower Division Math Courses (numbered Math 1050 to Math 2568) during Week 2. 

The university releases all course waiting lists after the first Friday of each semester. This means during Week 2, waitlist positions hold no bearing since they no longer are used. Students wishing to enroll during Week 2 in a lower division math course (numbered Math 1050 to Math 2568) must request permission directly through the Math Advising Office. Through Week 2, permission is given on a first come, first served basis.

Students wishing to add a course in Week 2:

Please contact the Math Advising office about your request in one of the following ways and make sure to be specific in including section numbers and course information. Students should know the specific class name, number and section they wish to enroll (e.g., Math 1151 Recitation Section #18455; Lecture Section #18451). As well, students should have alternate options in case their desired section is not available.

Math Advising will only approve late adds through the second week of the semester. Students will only be enrolled if space exists. If no more space is available, students must wait until the next semester the course is being offered to enroll. 

• Note: Late adds will not be permitted for Math 1116, Math 1125, Math 1126, Math 1135, Math 1136, Math 1165, Math 1166, Math 2167 and Math 2168. Enrollment into these courses is only permitted through the first week of the semester. 

Late Adds: Adding Upper Division Math Courses (numbered Math 3000 level or higher) during Week 2.

The university releases all course waiting lists after the first Friday of each semester. This means during Week 2, waitlist positions hold no bearing since they no longer are used. Students wishing to enroll during Week 2 in an upper division math course (numbered Math 3000 level or higher) must follow the procedures indicated below:

1. Fill out the course enrollment permission form. 
2. Obtain written permission from your instructor (email permission is sufficient).
3. Email mathadvisors@math.osu.edu to provide the two items above. 
4. The Ohio State University is not permitted to override the maximum classroom capacity set by fire codes. Priority may be given to graduating seniors.  
    

Changing Sections After Week 2 

The following instructions are for students taking math courses on the Columbus campus. Students completing courses on regional campuses should discuss class changes with their advisor.
