General Education (GE) Requirements

Students completing a degree in Mathematics or Actuarial Science have the option of completing either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS).  This choice does not change the major program requirements.  The difference between earning a BA or a BS lies within the General Education (GE) coursework a student must complete as a part of their undergraduate degree.  Information about GE requirements can be found on The College of Arts and Sciences Advising and Academic Services.

All Majors

The following courses are required for all Math majors, these courses can also be used to satisfy GE requirements:

  • Math 1151 Calculus I satisfies the Quantitative and Logical Skills - Mathematical and Logical Analysis requirement
  • Math 1152  Calculus II partially satisfies the Open Option requirement

Math Tracks

Each track has a unique set of course requirements that is customized for the subject area. Some of these courses may also be used to fulfill requirements for particular GE categories as described below.

Applied Mathematics (Chemistry)

Students choosing the Applied Mathematics (Chemistry) track should take the following courses, which also fulfill the GE requirements.

  • Chemistry 1210, Chemistry 1220, and Biology 1113 or 1114 satisfies the Natural Science GE requirement
  • Physics 1250 and Physics 1251 satisfies the Open Option requirement.

Applied Mathematics (Physics)

Students choosing the Applied Mathematics (Physics) track should take the following courses, which also fulfill the GE requirements.

  • Physics 1250, Physics 1251, and Biology 1113 or 1114 satisfies the Natural Science GE requirement
  • Chemistry 1210 partially satisfies the Open Option requirement.

Biological Mathematics

Students choosing the Biological Mathematics track should take the following courses, which also fulfill the GE requirements.

  • Biology 1113, Biology 1114, and Chemistry 1210 satisfies the Natural Science GE requirement

Financial Mathematics

Students choosing the Financial Mathematics track should take the following courses, which also fulfill the GE requirements.

  • Economics 2001 and Economics 2002 satsfies the Social Science requirement.

Degree Audit (DARs)

Students can use Buckeye Link to run a degree audit, which provides an evaluation of how all the courses they have completed are used to meet both general and major are course requirements. Students can review Instructions to Run a Degree Audit (DARs) [pdf].
