- Calculus Sequences & Honors Calculus
- Calculus Advising
NOTE: Calculus advising sessions require completion of a questionnaire prior to meeting with a math faculty member.
I completed the OSU Math Placement Test. What math class should I take?
After you complete the OSU Math Placement Test, please check your math placement score (L, M, N, R, S, or T) shown on your orientation handout and your Advising Report.
Refer to the Math Placement Test Guide to determine which math course(s) you are eligible to enroll in based on your math placement score.
Discuss general major requirements with your primary advisor on Day 2 of your orientation program.
What if I completed an AP math exam?
With a score of 3 or higher on the following exams, OSU will award exam credit.
- AP Precalculus (3, 4, or 5) = Math 1150 Precalculus
- AP Calculus AB (3, 4, or 5) = Math 1151 Calculus I
- AP Calculus BC (3, 4, or 5) = Math 1151 Calculus I and Math 1152 Calculus II
Students who earned a Precalculus-3, AB-3, or BC-3 and need higher-level math are strongly encouraged to repeat the corresponding OSU course before proceeding in the math sequence. For example, students with an AP Calculus AB-3 are encouraged to enroll in Math 1151 (or equivalent) for Autumn 2025; Students with BC-3 Calculus are encouraged to enroll in Calculus II. Students with AP Precalculus-3 are encouraged to enroll in Math 1150 (Precalculus).
A student is eligible to enroll in a variety of math courses based on their earned AP math credit.
What if I have math transfer credit from another university?
If you have math transfer credit or college credit from dual enrollment classes, please make sure you have completed the following:
- Submit your college transcript electronically to OSU. Most math course equivalencies will be automatically determined.
- If you receive Math General credit, then your course will need to be further evaluated by the Math Department to determine an equivalency.
What are the math requirements for Engineering majors?
All Engineering students (both transfer and first time students) are required to complete the Math Placement Test.
Engineering students will need Math 1151 Calculus I, Math 1172 Engineering Math A, and beyond.
What are the math requirements for Business majors?
- Math 1130 Algebra for Business and Math 1131 Calculus for Business fulfill the minimum requirements
- For more rigor, consider taking
- Math 1148 College Algebra instead of Math 1130
- Math 1151 Calculus I instead of Math 1131
- For dual degrees or double majors, consider taking Math 1151.
What are the math requirements for my major?
- Refer to the Math Requirements for Each Major guidelines.
- Based on your math entry-level, (e.g. Precalculus), please refer to the Math Progression Chart.
What calculus sequences are offered by OSU?
OSU offers multiple calculus sequences based on a student's major.
For more information on honors calculus sequences, please see the question below.
What are the Honors calculus options?
Honors calculus options include the following:
- Math 1181H Honors Calculus I and Math 2182H Honors Calculus II sequence
- Math 4181H Honors Analysis I and Math 4182H Honors Analysis II sequence
Permission from the Math Department is required to enroll in either sequence. Enrollment in an Honors program is not necessary.
Where do I go to get Calculus advising guidance from Math faculty?
To meet with a math faculty member during Day 1 Orientation to discuss calculus options and/or permission to enroll in an Honors math course, you'll need to first fill out the following QUESTIONNAIRE (link coming soon).
Once the questionnaire is submitted, you will be provided further instruction, (e.g. meeting location and timeframe).
