Rado Lecture - Ruth Charney
Title: The Bridge from Geometry to Group Theory
Speaker: Ruth Charney (Brandeis University)
Abstract: While groups are defined as algebraic objects, they can also be viewed as symmetries of geometric objects. This viewpoint gives rise to powerful tools for studying infinite groups. In this lecture I will introduce a few of the central ideas in Geometric Group Theory and give a brief preview of topics to be covered in the following two lectures.
