Title: Beyond Hyperbolicity: Finding Hyperbolic Behavior in Unexpected Places

Speaker: Ruth Charney (Brandeis University)

Abstract: Once we leave the world of hyperbolic spaces, certain key properties are lost. Nevertheless, it turns out that some techniques from hyperbolic geometry can be applied to much broader classes of groups. In this lecture I will discuss some recent work on finding and encoding hyperbolic behavior in non-hyperbolic groups.
