Topology, Geometry and Data Seminar - Gunnar Carlsson
Title: Topology and Exploratory Data Analysis
Speaker: Gunnar Carlsson (Stanford University)
Abstract: Several decades ago, John Tukey introduced the notion of exploratory data analysis, with the idea of using outputs of various types in order to make the data more understandable. This is clearly a part of statistics that is complementary to confirmatory statistics. The goal is to make hypothesis generation more efficient, and to be able to formulate more complex questions. We will discuss the relationship that topology has with this point of view, with numerous examples.
