Dear Friends of the Department,
Welcome to our autumn newsletter! During these coming years of my service as department chair, I look forward to increased engagement of the department with the broader community and to update you on our activities as a national research and education center.
This issue of our newsletter contains an article on our Math and Statistics Learning Center, which provides free support to students in lower-division mathematics and statistics courses through tutoring services, content workshops and exam reviews.
We also have an article on our collaboration with the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences, which we have recently joined as a member and sponsor. The Alliance is a prominent national organization focused on creating a welcoming educational environment for all graduate students and underrepresented minorities in the mathematical sciences.
Another article highlights a recent interdisciplinary research grant awarded to faculty in our department from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). With the support of this grant, the department will use its expertise to provide key mathematical training for NGA researchers as well as online course material in geodetic science.
Our final article gives an update on recent outreach activities through our outreach initiative, Buckeye Aha! Math-Moments (BAMM), which is aimed at increasing the public awareness and appreciation of mathematics through periodic events and projects.
In addition to these articles, this issue contains some spotlights on select members of our community as well as a spotlight on the new Directed Reading Program run by our graduate students.
We hope you will enjoy reading our newsletter. And as always, we encourage you to consider donating funds to help support our departmental activities.
