The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) student chapter was resuscitated this year after being mothballed during COVID. Graduate students Kriti Sehgal, Katelynn Huneycutt and Daniel Packer led the chapter as president, vice president and treasurer, respectively. This year the SIAM student chapter hosted several social events to attract new members including pizza and ice cream nights, game nights, and other meet and great events in the math tower. SIAM also organized a local modeling competition and sponsored students to compete in the international COMAP competition. For her hard work and success, President Sehgal received a certificate of recognition from SIAM. President Sehgal intends to apply her expertise in mathematics in industry after she graduates.
This academic year, the SIAM student chapter will be led by undergraduate actuarial science major Jana Abedeljaber, returning as vice president is graduate student Katelynn Huneycutt, and Gowrav Mannem, a mathematical finance major, will be the new treasurer. The student chapter intends to introduce a new competition in mathematical finance and host alumni events. In particular, the students are interested in speaking to industry professionals who were math majors in order to learn about career opportunities and pathways to success.
