Sunia Cai, a distinguished alumna of Ohio State University's Financial Mathematics program, has built an impressive career in corporate finance by embracing her mantra: "Just try it and see if you hate it."
As an undergraduate, Sunia immersed herself in diverse extracurricular activities to discover her true interests. She led the Math to Industry seminar as student president with Dr. Krystal Taylor. The pair established MTI to further forge connections between our OSU Mathematics Department and industry-leading professionals by organizing alumni guest speaker events and case competitions. Sunia also participated in a coding bootcamp hosted by the Erdos Institute to learn Python and R, HackOH/O hackathons, business case competitions, and student clubs including Buckeye Capital Investors and the Chinese Folk Music Orchestra.

Her internship at Nationwide as an actuarial pricing analyst revealed her passion for corporate finance, leading her to a Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) role at Allstate. At Allstate, Sunia applied advanced mathematical models to financial systems, automating reports and developing predictive models, showcasing the versatility of a mathematical education and inspiring her peers.
Driven to advance her analytical skills and explore AI and machine learning, Sunia pursued a Master of Science in Business Analytics at UCLA Anderson School of Business. After graduating, she joined Amazon as a Senior Financial Analyst. At Amazon, her expertise in mathematical principles and data analytics tools like Tableau and Python has significantly enhanced financial forecasting and strategic planning, impacting operational efficiency and revenue growth.
Sunia Cai's journey from Ohio State University to her influential role at Amazon exemplifies the power of exploration and continuous learning. Her achievements inspire current students, demonstrating the vast career opportunities available to those passionate about applying mathematical concepts in the professional world. She continues to be involved with the OSU Mathematics Department, and has returned to speak at the Math to Industry seminar, now a joint venture with SIAM, that she helped create. We celebrate Sunia's achievements in our Spring Newsletter this year.
