Dear Friends of the Department,
Welcome to our summer newsletter! Our department has many success stories and great news to share with you after this difficult year. I am pleased to update you on our latest research, teaching, and outreach activities. We are grateful for the increased engagement with our alumni and the broader community.
This issue of our newsletter contains an article on "Hidden Figures Revealed: Dynamic History and Narratives of Black Mathematicians at The Ohio State University." This is a project funded by Ohio State’s Seed Fund for Racial Justice, and led by our postdoctoral scholar Ranthony Edmonds who was featured in an NPR podcast. The project is the first comprehensive historical study of Black mathematicians at a single U.S. institution.
We also have an article on the Erdős institute, which is a multi-university initiative to help PhD students identify job opportunities in industry. The Erdős institute, led by mathematics professor Roman Holowinsky, has grown significantly in just a few years. Its program of Invitations to Industry talks has been running very well despite the shut-down on in-person meetings until recently.
Another article is about the outstanding performance of our graduate students in Ohio State’s graduate school competitions. Three of our graduate students received Ohio State’s highest honors in research, teaching, and leadership this year. Our department is extremely proud to have these graduate students. To get to know them better, we reproduce an interview with them in an article.
In addition to these articles, this newsletter issue contains an update on our newly designed website which is now more user-friendly, searchable and accessible. There are also spotlights on new and select members of our community, as well as highlights of research and teaching successes by our undergraduate and graduate students.
We hope you will enjoy reading our newsletter. And as always, we encourage you to consider donating funds to help support our departmental activities.
