The Ohio State chapter Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) under the leadership of Elizabeth Campolongo (president, grad, '22), Kriti Sehgal (vice president, grad), Shreeya Behera (treasurer, grad), Katelynn Huneycutt (secretary, grad), Hannah Johnson (social media chair, undergrad), and Danielle Mattias (marketing chair, undergrad) saw a great year with many social and academic events.
The highlight of the academic year was an end-of-the-year club outing to the Columbus Center of Science and Industry (COSI), generously sponsored by Prof. Marty Golubitsky. A total of ten AWM members joined in the outing and had a great time exploring the science museum, followed by a group dinner.
In addition, the AWM hosted a book club for the 2021-2022 academic year, reading together the book "Power in Numbers: The Rebel Women of Mathematics" (purchased by Prof. Marty Golubitsky -- thank you!) and learning about the women mathematicians who are making an impact in various fields of research. In addition, the junior participants had the opportunity to be paired up with an established member of the AWM who served as an unofficial mentor throughout the year.
The AWM also organized two panel Q&A events, one on graduate school admissions, and another on undergraduate research opportunities, which both saw high attendance.
On the social side, the AWM ran monthly coffee hours (open to everyone!), hosted movie nights, and visited the math department's graduate open house to strengthen the department's recruitment efforts for women in math.
The AWM looks forward to an even more exciting 2022-2023 academic year, with many more social events planned (some in collaboration with other groups from the math department). For more information on the upcoming social events, or to get involved, please contact the AWM at awmohiostate@gmail.com!
