Assistant Professor Jingyin Huang has been awarded a 2022 Sloan Research Fellowship. This is a highly prestigious annual fellowship awarded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to U.S. and Canadian early-career researchers in chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics. Dr. Huang joins a cohort of 118 Sloan awardees in 2022, chosen from over 1,000 selected nominees. Each winner receives a two-year $75,000 fellowship to support the fellow’s research.
Dr. Huang is an expert in geometric group theory, which studies the deep connections between the algebraic properties of groups and the geometry of spaces they act on. He plans to continue the study of geometry and dynamics of infinite discrete groups acting on singular metric spaces which are non-positively curved in an appropriate sense. He adds: “This involves two components. The first is that, given a mysterious group, constructing a metric space with interesting curvature properties where the group acts upon; and the second is to use the first step to understand specific properties of the group.”
Dr. Huang completed his PhD at New York University in 2015 under the direction of Bruce Kleiner, on “Quasi-isometric classification of right-angled Artin groups with finite outer automorphism group.” Dr. Huang subsequently held postdoctoral positions at McGill University and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany. He joined the mathematics department at Ohio State in 2018, first as Zassenhaus Assistant Professor, and then as the Alice Louise Ridenour Wood Chair in Mathematics since 2020.
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was founded in 1934. It aims to support original research and education in STEM subjects and economics in the U.S. and Canada, and to improve diversity in scientific institutions and deepen public engagement with science and scientists.
