On April 4th, undergrads Kabir Belgikar and Mark Kikta accompanied Assistant Professor and Program Specialist Bart Snapp in presenting to 9th grade algebra class from Columbus Alternative High School (CAHS). Professor Snapp adapted a Hidden Figures activity for the event, and Belgikar and Kikta concluded by giving a glowing presentation about what it was like to study mathematics at OSU.
After the event, Dr. Snapp lead a tour of the Math Tower, highlighting the patterns and tessellations on each floor of the tower. He sincerely apologizes for the noise and ruckus; but at that (noisy) movement, those 9th graders were enjoying themselves thinking about math. Teachers later reported that the students continued talking amongst themselves (unprompted) about math for the rest of the day. In efforts to help these kids continue to discover the enjoyment and utility of math, he is planning to visit CAHS on May 11th where he will meet again with these 9th graders, and also work with some other classes.
