Title: 2023 Integral Bowl
Hosted by: AWM and Jim Talamo
Description: The Integral Bowl is back for the first time since the pandemic! Join us for a fun evening featuring an individual and a team competition with free pizza and donuts!
Contest Information
All integrals in the competition can be evaluated using techniques covered in Calculus 1 and 2 (Math 1151, 1152/1172, or equivalent courses). Responses will be written on paper; no technology or electronic devices are permitted during the competition.
Individual Part
Participants will be given 10 integrals to calculate over the course of 45 minutes. Solutions may be handed in every 15 minutes. Points will be awarded based on the difficulty of the integral and the time of submission.
Scoring
Integrals will have a base point value of 1 to 5, depending on the difficulty of the integral. The total point value for each integral will be calculated as a product of the base point value and a time multiplier.
There will be 2 integrals worth 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 points.
- 1 pt: can be evaluated using basic techniques, such as algebra and simple substitutions, or interpreting definite integrals geometrically.
- 2 and 3 pts: can be evaluated using integration techniques covered in Math 1152/1172 (integration by parts, trigonometric integrals, trigonometric substitution, partial fraction decomposition) or by interpreting definite integrals geometrically.
- 4 and 5 pts: challenging integrals that require a combination of more than one technique from the list above and/or some creativity to evaluate.
The multiplier will be determined as follows. Correct solutions handed in at the end of:
- 15 minutes will have a multiplier of 2.0.
- 30 minutes will have a multiplier of 1.5.
- 45 minutes will have a multiplier of 1.0.
An intermission with free pizza and donuts will take place between the individual and team part.
Team Part
Teams will consist of 3 members. You may sign up with a team, or we will assign you to one if needed. Participants will be given 7 integrals to calculate over the course of 45 minutes. Solutions may be again handed in every 15 minutes. Points will be awarded based on the difficulty of the integral and the time of submission. Multipliers will be determined using the same criteria as the individual part.
The competition is limited to 78 participants, so please sign up using the link below as soon as you can!
