In the first half of this talk, we discuss a polynomially effective equidistribution result for orbits of semisimple groups on congruence quotients. This extends work of Einsiedler, Margulis, and Venkatesh by removing the assumed triviality of the centralizer in the ambient group. An essential ingredient of the proof is an effective closing lemma for unipotent flows from work with Lindenstrauss, Margulis, Mohammadi, and Shah.
