Title: Invitation to Operator Theory

Speaker: Jan Lang

Abstract: Operator Theory is a branch of Functional Analysis which focuses on study of operators (mainly linear operators) on function spaces. Operator theory provides PDE, ODE, Harmonic analysis and many other areas of mathematics with important tools and techniques.

In this lecture we will demonstrate on a few examples the importance of Operator theory and its connection with theory of Function spaces and Approximation Theory and then we mention some problems.

Note: This is part of the Invitations to Mathematics lecture series given each year in Autumn Semester. Pre-candidacy students can sign up for this lecture series by registering for one or two credit hours of Math 6193, class #9226 (with Prof H. Moscovici).
