Title: Benford's law and Dynamical Systems

SpeakerAlena Orchenko (Ohio State University)

Abstract: In this talk, we will consider irrational rotation on a circle and show some of its properties. Then, we will apply the knowledge obtained to prove Benford's law for the sequence $\{2^n\}$ where $n$ runs over natural numbers. Benford's law has applications in determining the validity of real-life data sets such as income taxes or stock exchange valuations.
