Title:  Groups of Homeomorphisms of the Reals

Abstract:  Left orderability provides a surprising algebraic characterization of countable groups admitting faithful actions by orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the reals. I will give an introduction to left orderable groups and to Thompson's groups F and T, and then discuss my construction (with Lodha) of finitely generated and finitely presented simple left orderable groups, answering a well known old question of Rhemtulla. Then I will describe my construction of a non-left orderable subgroup of the group of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the disc, answering a well known question of Calegari.
