Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Title: What is the Davenport Constant?

SpeakerAustin Antoniou (Ohio State University)

Abstract: Let $G$ be an additively-written finite abelian group. The Davenport constant of $G$ (denoted $D(G)$) is the length of a longest zero-sum sequence over $G$ which has no proper zero-sum subsequence. Though the problem of determining the exact value of $D(G)$ is over 50 years old, much is still unknown. We will discuss what is known about the Davenport constant, its historical (and current) connections to the study of non-unique factorizations, and what is still left to learn.
