Speaker: Austin Antoniou (Ohio State University) Abstract: Let $G$ be an additively-written finite abelian group. The Davenport constant of $G$ (denoted $D(G)$) is the length of a longest zero-sum sequence over $G$ which has no proper zero-sum subsequence. Though the problem of determining the exact value of $D(G)$ is over 50 years old, much is still unknown. We will discuss what is known about the Davenport constant, its historical (and current) connections to the study of non-unique factorizations, and what is still left to learn.
