Title:  What are mathematical games and the Hales-Jewett Theorem?

Speaker:  Florian Richter, The Ohio State University

Seminar Type What is... ?

Abstract:  In my talk I will present a selection of "games" from the area of combinatorial game theory that have been very closely studied and connect to interesting theorems in combinatorics and Ramsey theory.  The rules and strategies of such games can be expressed in clear mathematical terms and are usually as simple as the rules of Tic-Tac-Toe or peg-solitaire. My talk includes games like 'The game of Sim', 'Conway's Soldiers', 'Quantum Tic-Tac-Toe' and others and we will draw connections to theorems like Ramsey's theorem and the Hales-Jewett theorem.
