Vilas Winstein Named Goldwater Scholar in Mathematics
Vilas Winstein, a junior in the honors mathematics program at OSU, has been named a Goldwater Scholar in mathematics for the 2019-2020 academic year. Congratulations to Vilas! The research mentors for Vilas were Sergei Chmutov and Ghaith Hiary.
Vilas studies computer science and mathematics at OSU. During his senior year in high school, he took multivariable calculus and linear algebra at OSU. Vilas writes: "My experience with those courses and the professors at OSU (specifically Professors Jim Fowler and Ghaith Hiary) inspired me to study math as well as computer science."
The Goldwater scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year has been awarded to 496 college students, from an estimated pool of 5,000 sophomores and juniors from across the United States. A student who receives a Goldwater Scholarship will receive up to $7,500 in the next year to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board.
