The Math to Industry seminar at OSU was created to empower students to use their mathematics degree to land rewarding jobs. In this seminar, students have the opportunity to learn from industry leading professionals about the transition from the university to the job market. Our list of speakers includes mathematicians at Target, Nordstrom, Google, Nationwide, and more.
This year, MTI hosted former OSU Alumni, Sunia Cai, who majored in Financial Math and Information Science. Sunia is currently a graduate student at UCLA in the Master of Science in Business Analytics program. She visited the Math to Industry seminar in April of 2022, and spoke about her experience as Financial Consultant II with Allstate insurance Company, as well as her experience as an intern with Nationwide. Aside from those experiences, she is a professional Chinese lute player actively performing with Chinese Folk Music Orchestra at OSU.
David Cannone, Industry Executive Director, visited MTI in March of 2023 and spoke about How Math Pays the Bills. In particular, he talked about the role of mathematics in his career with use of visual stories, ways to communicate math concepts to non-math people, and gave general career advice. David leads a team that focuses on risk, fraud, and marketing by engineering sales of complex data solutions. He has worked in financial services for 20+ years and holds an Undergraduate Degree from Iowa State University and a Master’s Degree from Duquesne University.
Going forward, MTI plans to start catering more to graduate students by inviting speakers who hold PhDs in math to fill this need in our department. For more about this seminar and upcoming events, check out our website at https://u.osu.edu/careerprep/
