How did you first become interested in actuarial science?

One of my teacher recommended the profession to me during class in High School!

What did you think about the faculty in the program?

Ohio State's faculty is rooting for a better and more well-rounded actuaries with their advice and curriculum changes. I am impressed with how much they advocate for the improvement of the system!

Tell us about your internship experience.

I interned at Humana for the summer before my Junior year and my Senior year. I worked on projects that involved coding with VBA, SAS, and SQL. I learned about actuarial judgement, how to present to leadership, and how to do actuarial analysis. My internship ended up feeling like a shortened version of my everyday job, just with more support from my leader.

How would you describe your work in actuarial science, and what excites you about the field?

I price healthcare plans. This involves analyzing each of my plans for expected changes based off of trend and membership expectations. I monitor my work for reasonability and accuracy. I work in Excel and I don't currently do any coding, but I know that other actuaries in my company do a lot more coding than I do!

Is there anything about actuarial science that might surprise someone new to the field?

This job requires judgement - it's why we take the exams! The exams train us to have better and more sound actuarial judgement. No decision is black and white. You paint a story and back it up with data, but there isn't one answer.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Develop your Excel and coding skills but remember to be humble and a team player.
