What did you think about the faculty in the program?
The professors and advisors in the program are awesome. They encourage you to get involved with things outside of class, like the job fairs and case study competitions, which is great. I noticed that a lot of the professors made an effort to show us how things are actually used in practice, which was really helpful in preparing us for the job.
How were your interactions with other students in the program?
Everyone I interacted with was great, and I really enjoyed working with other students on group projects and case study competitions.
What has been your biggest takeaway from the program? Was there any class or skill that stood out? How did the content prepare you for your role?
The practicum class was interesting because we got exposure to a lot of different actuaries and types of actuarial work. A personal favorite class of mine was Stochastic Calculus for Finance, particularly the second sequence of the course. Our professor encouraged us to take turns giving lectures to the rest of the class, and we spent a lot of time on numerical methods, which was really challenging. I think these two classes helped me a lot with my presentation skills, which is a big part of my role.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
Get involved with the actuarial club early, and attend some of the actuarial job fairs and company presentations - they helped me get my first internship, which eventually led to a full time role. And pass as many exams as you can handle while in college, it really helps a lot when trying to land an internship or a job.
