Title: Quantum Field Theory Seminar Series
Speaker: James Carlson
Abstract: Topics
- Review of canonical quantization and the discrete space model
- Free field theory: Klein Gordon Equations
- Interactions, scattering, and a second look at Feynman diagrams
- Path integral approach
One goal is to understand most of the first chapter of A. Zee's "Quantum Theory in a Nutshell," which contains such nuggets as why scalar fields result in attractive forces. This is the story behind Hideki Yukawa's prediction of the existence of the pi meson, which mediates the strong interaction that holds nuclei together.
Note: This is a recurring seminar lecture series for the entire Spring 2017 semester on Tuesdays 11:40 - 12:40 in Cockins Hall 240 starting January 17, 2017 with last date of April 18, 2017.
