Title: "Writing about math so people will want to read it"
Speaker: Evelyn Lamb
Abstract: Mathematicians want to tell people about the work they love and why they love it. People want to read accessible articles about math. But many have had bad experiences with math, and there is often a gap between what mathematicians write and what people are prepared to read. In this workshop, we will try to close that gap by working to produce accessible explainers about some of our favorite math topics. We will start with a crash course in math writing, looking at some effective math stories and other writing tips. Then workshop attendees will start working on their own articles about any area of math they choose. The next day, we will continue to work on our articles, including some supportive group critiques of work we have been doing for participants who are willing to share their work. We will also talk about how to disseminate math writing and about other media that lend themselves to math communication.
Bring a laptop or paper, depending on how you prefer to work. If you come prepared with a topic you want to write about, great. If not, we'll help you come up with one.
Workshop continues on Friday, March 29, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in MW724.
