Joan Leitzel wins MAA award for Distinguished Service to Math

Joan Leitzel

At the Joint Meeting of the AMS and the MAA in Baltimore on Jan 15-18, 2014, Joan Leitzel received the 2014 Gung and Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics.  This is the most prestigious award for service offered by the Mathematical Association of America.  Joan was a faculty member in our Department for 25 years before she left in 1990 to take on administrative jobs at the NSF, the University of Nebraska, and the University of New Hampshire.  In her retirement she returned to Columbus and served another year to lead the creation of Ohio State's College of Arts and Sciences.  Further details about this award appear near the end of the prize booklet.

It is interesting to note that Joan taught in the Ross Mathematics Program at OSU during the 1960's, and that Arnold Ross received this MAA Distinguished Service Award in 1986.
