Mathematics to Industry (MTI) and Society for Industrial and Applied Math (SIAM) have been important parts of our math community, each dedicated to
benefiting students in similar ways. By merging resources, funding, and connections, we aimed
to provide enhanced opportunities and support for all students interested in the intersection of
mathematics and industry. We are pleased to announce that our merged club will now be known
as SIAM2I (SIAM To Industry).
Throughout the 2023 - 2024 Academic year, we've hosted a variety of engaging events,
featuring the following esteemed industry speakers:
1. Dr. Guido Camargo España | Team lead at the Center for Forecasting and
Outbreak Analysis (CDC)
2. Dr. Rebecca Sela | Data Science Director at JP Morgan Chase
3. Dennis Baer | President of the Math Advisory Board and Director of Business
Development Operations at Whitney, Bradley, & Brown Inc. (Retd)
4. Kieran Tomich| Rotational Analyst at KeyBank
One of the highlights of this semester was the 2024 OSU Quantathon - the inaugural
Quantitative Finance Competition organized by SIAM2I. The competition brought together
students from diverse mathematical backgrounds to tackle real-world problems faced by
industry professionals. In this 24-hour event students had the opportunity to apply their
mathematical skills and analytical thinking to solve complex problems of commodities trading
with crude oil securities.
We were honored to host Denise Dzkeova and Alex Hookway at the Quantathon. Denise
Dzkeova, a Software Engineer at Google and a former quant at Goldman Sachs, opened the
event by sharing her extensive experience in applying mathematical models to solve financial
problems. Following Denise's insightful talk, Alex Hookway, representing Nationwide Financial,
presented the competition problem and offered students a glimpse of the quantitative risk
management field.
The competition resulted in an overwhelming response, with over 70 enthusiastic
participants joining us for the event.
The diverse range of perspectives and skills demonstrated
by the participants underscored the interdisciplinary nature of quantitative finance and
highlighted the importance of collaboration in solving complex problems.
As we reflect on the success of the Quantitative Finance Competition, we look forward to
organizing similar events in the future, providing students with hands-on experiences that bridge
the gap between academia and industry.
Stay tuned for updates on upcoming events and opportunities hosted by SIAM2I!
