Dear Friends of the Department,
Welcome to our autumn newsletter! We are pleased to update you on our latest department activities and news. We hope this will keep you informed and engaged with the life of the mathematics department.
This issue of the newsletter contains an article on the merger of two of our student organizations, Mathematics to Industry (MTI) and Society for Industrial and Applied Math (SIAM). The resulting club SIAM2I (SIAM 2 Industry) hosted a number of speakers and events throughout the academic year. Our SIAM student chapter also received recognition from SIAM.
Additionally, we have an annual update from the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center, and spotlights on two new faculty members (Cesar Cuenca and Liu Beibei).
Please also stay tuned for our Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 issues, where you can expect an update on OSU Cycle, a mentoring effort organized by our graduate and undergraduates that aims to provide support for first-year college students making the transition to university life. You'll also find a spotlight on our new faculty, Dusty Grundmeier, as well as an obituary honoring our dear friend and colleague, Professor Syed M. Tariq Rizvi. We also include an alumni spotlight featuring recent OSU math department graduate, Sunia Cai, who discusses her time at UCLA business school and her path to her current position as Senior Financial Analyst at Amazon. Finally, in our Summer issue, we recognize the achievements of Assistant Professor Jennifer Park, who was awarded the Faculty Excellence Award, and we hear about the recent COMAPS math modeling competition. We also have a word from the organizer of the Young Mathematicians conference in the works, numerous impressive grant recognitions amongst our faculty to announce, retirements and an impact article highlighting the ways that philanthropic support has benefited students, faculty and research endeavors in mathematics.
We hope that you will enjoy reading our newsletter. Please let us hear from you, and if you have suggestions for improvement and the kinds of news that is important to you. And as always, we encourage you to consider donating funds to help support our departmental activities.
