The number of applications to our PhD program for Autumn 2024 was nearly 500, which is about 17% more than last year. Overall, the number of applications to our PhD program has almost doubled over the last decade.
About 40% of the applicants this year are US citizens and about 70% are from US schools. The applicants came from 47 countries, counting by citizenship, and from 37 countries, counting by country of last school. The applicant pool this year was very strong, both in applied and theoretical. About 42% of the applicants were already enrolled master’s degree. Notably, the percentage of applicants to the applied track increased to 29% this year.
The Admission rate this year was 24.1%. This is comparable to the historical average. We admitted 119 applicants. (Last year, we admitted 109.) The yield percentage this year was 29.5% which is higher than last year’s 21%. Nearly half of our 30 campus visitors accepted, which is a significantly higher portion of accepting visiting students than typical in recent year.
The incoming class has 35 students who will start this Autumn. The incoming students hail from 8 countries (counting either by citizenship or by country of last school), with the majority from the US. The incoming class includes 11 in the applied track and 7 women.
13 of our incoming students are University Fellows, and several of them received multi-year fellowships. Overall, we were awarded 16 years of fellowship support by the graduate school: 13 first year fellowships plus 3 dissertation year fellowships. The estimated graduate school commitment in stipend and tuition support from these fellowships is around $750,000.
