The Ohio State University Achieves Gold Level of New Casualty Actuarial Society University Recognition Program
2/27/2026 Arlington, VA – The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has announced that The Ohio State University has qualified for Gold Tier within the CAS University Recognition Program. This program recognizes academic institutions with a demonstrated commitment to preparing property and casualty actuaries through their educational offerings. The CAS is the world’s only actuarial organization focused exclusively on property and casualty risks, serving over 10,000 members worldwide. CAS members work for insurance companies, educational institutions, state insurance departments, federal government agencies, independent consulting firms, and many other organizations that require management of risk.
The CAS offers three levels of recognition for universities, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Benefits offered through this program are designed to address the specific needs of universities depending on their established tier.
The Actuarial Science Program at The Ohio State University, housed within the Department of Mathematics, is one of the largest and most established actuarial programs in the United States. Founded in 1979, Ohio State was among the first universities in the nation to offer a standalone major in actuarial science. Today, the program includes a robust undergraduate major, the Master of Actuarial and Quantitative Risk Management (MAQRM) program established in 2016, and a PhD research area. Supported by seven full-time faculty members, the program consistently produces up to 100 actuarial graduates per year.
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has recognized The Ohio State University as one of only 18 Gold Tier institutions in the CAS University Recognition Program. This distinction reflects Ohio State’s strong commitment to preparing students for careers in property and casualty (P&C) actuarial science.
The CAS is the world’s only actuarial organization dedicated exclusively to property and casualty risks, serving more than 10,000 members worldwide. Along with the Society of Actuaries, the CAS is one of the two primary organizations that credential actuaries in the United States.
At Ohio State, about 40% of actuarial science students pursue careers in the P&C insurance industry. The actuarial science curriculum covers material aligned with the exams leading to the Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) credential. In addition, the program’s alumni advisory board has long included CAS-credentialed alumni, helping ensure the curriculum and professional development opportunities reflect the needs of students interested in the P&C track. Ohio State alumni also have a strong track record of success in the P&C industry, including leadership roles such as chief actuary at major firms.
“We are thrilled to honor universities through the CAS University Recognition Program,” Victor Carter-Bey, DM, CEO of the Casualty Actuarial Society. “Universities that have achieved THE Gold Tier have achieved highest level of recognition offered by meeting part or all of the following criteria: offering dedicated property and casualty insurance courses, placing P&C actuaries on their faculty and/or department advisory boards, and graduating actuarial students with jobs in the P&C field and who have obtained credit for CAS credentialing requirements.”
The CAS University Recognition Program builds upon the former CAS University Award Program introduced in 2016. The university will receive a monetary award and a visit from a CAS leader among a variety of other benefits. The list of recognized academic institutions is posted on the CAS website.
