Student Success Champion: Carolyn Johns
The Department of Mathematics is pleased to highlight Carolyn Johns, assistant director of the Math and Statistics Learning Center (MSLC), in this Student Success Champion feature. With an unconventional path from theatre arts to mathematics, Carolyn brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to STEM education, combining analytical rigor with a strong emphasis on connection and communication.
In her role as a scholar-practitioner, Carolyn leverages research in tutoring pedagogy and organizational improvement to enhance student learning and success. Under her leadership, the MSLC has implemented innovative, data-informed initiatives—such as structured weekly tutoring appointments and the introduction of Learning Assistants—to promote consistency, engagement, and deeper conceptual understanding.
Beyond program development, Carolyn is a dedicated advocate for building student confidence in mathematics and mentoring the next generation of professionals. Her work reflects a commitment to ensuring that every student and tutor who engages with the MSLC leaves more capable, confident, and prepared for future success.
