“I really enjoyed being among these great minds — they inspired me to challenge myself further.’’
In late March 2019, Ohio State Actuarial Science student Edison Gu was elected as president of the Actuarial Club for the 2019-20 academic year. Gu is working toward a Bachelor of Science in both actuarial science and data analytics. He has successfully completed the actuarial exams Exam P and Exam FM, and is awaiting results from Exam IFM. Gu accepted an internship with Nationwide Financial for summer 2019.
Gu is proud to be a member of the Ohio State community. He mentioned that when searching for summer internship opportunities “almost every company I met with had Ohio State alumni with whom I could connect.”
As incoming president of the Actuarial Club at Ohio State, he looks to continue existing successful programs and activities, such as the Actuarial Case Competitions, resume-review opportunities, bringing in guest speakers like New York City Chief Actuary Sherry Chan (Math Advisory Board member and Ohio state math alum), the CAS networking panel, and various insurance company representatives.
“All these networking and professional development events have been great motivations for me to explore more in the industry. I really enjoyed being among these great minds — they inspired me to challenge myself further.”
Gu also emphasized the success of the Actuarial Club’s Peer Mentorship Program. Mentors try to meet their mentees on a weekly basis to give insightful guidance, especially during the recruiting season. Gu’s mentor is outgoing Actuarial Club President Kevin Shin. “[Kevin] has been a great resource to me in my exam and interview prep,” he said.
